Blog SEO – How To Optimize Your Blog For Top Search Engine Rankings

In my previous post, I shared the basics of blog SEO so that you can drive free and unlimited traffic to your blog.  As promised, today I’m going to go over the actual steps or actions that you need to take to ensure that you have a fully search engine optimized blog.

Without further ado, let’s jump right into it, shall we?

Let Your Blog Be Visible

That’s right. You’d be surprised how some people miss this important aspect. Unfortunately, WordPress sites are set to block search engines and that explains why this can be overlooked.

So, you need to check your Privacy settings to make sure that search engines know that your blog exists and make it visible.

In your admin area, go to Settings >> Privacy and check the first option:

Title, Description and Keywords

You need to have a title, description and meta tags for your blog. Before you start wondering what these are and where do you add them, I’ll show you how to get this done.

First off, you’d need to install the All in One SEO Pack plugin if you haven’t done so already and then add your title, description and keywords.

1. Title

This is the title of your home page and it’s important that it has your keyword in the beginning as search engine bots read from left to right.

A long title does not entice your readers to click on the link, so you should go for about 65 characters, just to give people an idea of what your blog is about.

2. Description

It speaks for itself. This is where you write a few words about what people can expect to find and learn from your blog. Again, you don’t need to write an essay to achieve this – a maximum of 170 characters will do. Your keyword should be used right at the beginning for the same reason cited above.

3. Keywords

In order to attract the right people to your blog, you need to add some keywords that are related to your blog. Word of caution: don’t display your money keywords as your competitors would easily discover them by just viewing your source page. Use generic but relevant keywords.


Permalink Settings

Your blog’s permalinks need to show the keywords so that you can improve your search rankings and help your content to be found online easily.

This is much better than using URLs that include question marks and numbers, e.g. This means nothing to search engine bots.

The good news is that you can change this default setting in your admin area, so that you can use the relevant keywords.

Warning: Now, before you drop everything to go and make the changes, you need to install a plugin called, Redirection 2.1.27 by John Godley so you don’t break your existing links.

Now, go to Settings > Permalinks > Custom Structure

Is Your Blog URL Properly Optimised?


In addition, before publishing your posts, you need to remove the extra words such as to, is, the, how, what and so forth. They have no significance and will not improve your search rankings.

You can remove them manually (if you’ll always remember to) or install a plugin called, SEO Slugs 1.0 by Andrei Mikrukov which can do a job for you automatically. I use this plugin, but I still double-check before hitting the “publish” button.

URL Canonicalization

What on earth is that? Don’t fret! This is just a fancy word with a simple meaning. You could unknowingly behaving different versions of your blog URL, all going to the same destination:


Trouble is, different URLs for the same blog, mean different blogs in Google’s eyes and this could hurt your blog SEO in a big way.

Here’s how to fix this problem:

1. Choose the version that you want to go for and use the same one all the time. In your admin area, go to Settings >> General and type in your chosen URL version.

2. Let Google know your preferred version by logging into your Google Webmasters Tool account (you do have one, right?).

Now, if people are using any version of the same URL, they will be redirected to your preferred one. And Google will recognize your chosen URL as well.

There you have it, these are the initial blog SEO actions that you need to take to make sure that you increase your search engine rankings and attract lots of traffic to your blog.

Two Popular Methods for Getting Free Traffic to Your MLM Blog

You’ve got your MLM blog up and running. Whether your blog is focused on promoting YOU as a leader and attractive sponsor, or your opportunity specifically, what you’re looking for is traffic. You want visitors who might be interested in what you have to offer.

I believe that the best way, long-term, to get free traffic online is through consistent and smart use of social media resources like Facebook. The drawback here is that it takes time to get on top of it and start establishing trust and authority on these sites. In the meantime, while you are building up your social media presence, how can you start getting more visitors to your site?

Many MLM business owners are drawn to free or inexpensive advertising methods such as traffic exchanges and safelist type programs. Since these have been around a long time and are appealing on the surface, I want to address the pros and cons of each.

Traffic Exchanges

Traffic exchanges are programs like Trafficswarm that allow you to earn credits by viewing web pages that other members have published. In turn, you can use these credits to get exposure for your own web page in the rotation. You also have the option for purchasing credits, which are usually cheap and save you hours of time clicking through to other members’ sites.

There is much debate about the effectiveness of traffic exchanges. The bottom line – they are not the most efficient way to get good MLM leads, but if you use them correctly, you can get leads using them. The key is understanding what most members are clicking away trying to accomplish in these programs.

People using traffic exchanges are shooting for one thing mainly – getting exposure for their site or offer. They may endure hours of clicking through sites, to build up credits, and barely notice the pages they land on. You can sit and read or do other things and occasionally click a link to visit another site and earn credits, without actually paying any real attention to it. It becomes robotic and automated after a while.

If you want to use traffic exchanges as part of your online MLM business strategy, the only chance you have to make it worthwhile is using them to build your mailing list. You need to create a free ebook or report on a topic that will appeal to people using these programs. Why are they there? To get more traffic and leads. So, offer a report or ebook on a topic like “Ten Steps to More MLM Traffic” or “Five Free Ways to Get Qualified MLM Leads Online“.

Make sense? Once you have the report, create a series of auto-responder messages and set up an account with an email list manager like Aweber. When someone opts in to your list, you can promote your opportunity to them in whatever manner you want (there are smart ways to do this that are beyond the scope of this article, but the bottom line is providing value to your subscribers and not trying to cram your opportunity down their throat with hype and hoopla).


Safelists are programs that you sign up in and agree to receive emails from other members in exchange for being able to send emails to them. The catch with these is that you are quite limited in how much mailing you can do as a “free” member. You almost always have to do a paid upgrade to make it worthwhile.

The major drawback to safelist advertising is that you are facing the same problems you face with email marketing in general. Many participants will set up secondary email accounts for these programs that they rarely if ever check. Paid members may have an option to opt out of receiving any member emails. Nonetheless, there are some people who actually scan the subject lines and open the ones that look interesting.

If you choose to use safelist marketing, follow the same basic strategy as for traffic exchanges – focus on creating a giveaway and build your list. With both, work hard on creating a good headline that will attract attention.

The Bottom Line

I want to make it clear that I don’t particularly recommend using traffic exchanges and safelists for promoting your online MLM business. The reason I am writing about them is that I know some MLM marketers who do get decent leads this way, and I realize that many are drawn to them because they are free or inexpensive to advertise with.

Just remember that people who have real success with these methods do it by focusing on getting opt-ins to their list so they can stay in touch and drip information and promotions to them over time. Nobody will sign up for your list unless they think there is something valuable in it for them.

Love him or hate him Eddie Van Halen is one seriously sharp Rock and Roller. I recently read an article that prompted me to take a look for Van Halen Style Brown M&M’s in my MLM blog.

Rock Stars get some amazing perks negotiated into their performance contracts. Whimsical requests are made and catered to by promoters all the time. One of the craziest “prima donna” requests of all time was made by Van Halen when he was actively touring. His standard concert contract called for a bowl of M&M’s backstage with the proviso, that all of the brown M&M’s be removed from the bowl. The presence of one single M&M was sufficient legal cause for Van Halen to cancel a scheduled appearance without giving advance notice and go on one of his infamous trash and bash rampages. He knew that if he found brown M&M’s, he would also find other technical errors that could ruin their whole show or even possibly kill people. By simply inserting this clause into his contracts, Van Halen was easily alerted to a potential problem BEFORE it could affect his show. Sheer GENIUS !!

Great story right? What does this have to do with your MLM blog?

Your blog is a 24/7 marketing tool and if it is not working FOR you, it is working AGAINST you. Your blog is your virtual business card and sales assistant. It allows you to present yourself as an expert in your niche while helping you connect and build relationships with your ideal prospects through service, trust and value. It is a very effective way of getting information in front of a large number of people and creating new relationships and leads.

  7. How long are they staying on your blog?
  8. How many posts are they reading while they are on your blog?
  9. Are people commenting on your posts?
  10. Are people interacting with the comments others leave on your blog?
  11. Are you acknowledging and responding to those comments?
  12. Are people sharing your information on Twitter, Facebook and other social networks?
  13. Is your content being bookmarked and shared throughout the social bookmarking sites?
  14. Are people opting in to receive your e-Newsletter or e-Zine?
  15. Is your mailing list growing?
  16. Do you communicate regularly with the people on your list?
  17. Are you providing value to people in those communications?
  18. Are people buying what you promote through your affiliate links on your blog or in your emails?
  19. Are people contacting you directly (phone, Skype, email) to get to know you better or to get more information about what you have going on?
  20. Do you know how many people are subscribed to your RSS feed?

Metrics Really Matter

Successful blogging takes thought, time and an acute awareness of what’s working or not. Paying attention to the brown M&M’s alerts you to potential problems and things that just aren’t working in your best interests. It allows you to leverage your time and efforts better by pointing out areas that need your attention immediately.

Van Halen’s story is a great reminder about the wisdom of setting up early warning systems. Having those systems in place saves time, wasted effort and frustration.

It is a great thing if you know the answers to all of those questions. It is a better than great thing if you know what TO DO with all of that information once you have compiled it. So that will be the topic of  next week’s post 🙂
