Hey Lisle, in my opinion, this is where good old communication skills come into play.

Social media is a great way to find like minded people, connect etc. But what do you do when someone responds to your message or reaches out to you online?

You can refer them straight to a website... boring and will end the relationship right there.

Or, reach out and REALLY connect the old fashion way.

As soon as someone takes interest in what you are saying, it's time to take extra interest in them and reach out to connect with them.

Get on Skype, get on the phone, get on a video chat, leave a video message. Do anything you can make the relationship real.

Once you have established real trust and a real connection, its easy to ask if they are interested in extra ways to make money.

The phone (or skype) is still the best way to communicate and invite people to your business.

Good things happen when you pick up the phone, that's for sure.

Social media and blogging helps you spread the word and reach out to many more like minded people.

Its a great way for people to connect with you while you are not there. But it's what happens after that which really matters.

Does that give you any ideas?

I have to second Tony's question - how do you transition from chatting/providing value to people getting 'happily involved'?

Hey Tony, thank you for your comment. Yes, one should definitely have a tracking system in place and know where the money is going to come from. I feel the most important aspect is to have complete clarity on what your goals are and what you want to achieve with your blog. If you know where you want your visitors to go, it's easier to provide valuable content surrounding that niche that can eventually direct them there, although that might not be something strategic for every single post.

One thing that people aren't really covering is the conversion process from social media to a sale/sign up. Driving people to a blog is great, getting people to subscribe to it is great too, but where does conversion happen? I think that's a great question to ask for all marketers to ask when disusing the sales potential of social networking sites.

It's easy to talk about not pitching on social media and to tell people to drive visitors to your blog and to be helpful in providing neutral information. At some point you need to have a conversion sales process or it becomes a wasted marketing effort other than just personal brand awareness which would be a longer term strategy, one that you focus on over a period of time.
